Barney

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

He smiles wholeheartedly, with his body posture, and his face, even his eyes, despite being blind. When you interact with him, taking him for a walk, petting him, and talking to him, he becomes the proudest dog in the world, sitting there so dignified and basking in pride. He is the favorite of many of us because he is unique, not because he is blind. His blindness simply gives him something even more unique. If guided properly, he can become the perfect pet. He has so much trust in people that he could follow them to the ends of the earth. So what if he can't see? He trusts you, who can.He is an incredibly affectionate dog, who when petted smiles and stands proud and dignified, looking like an angel. If we were to have a child draw an angel in the form of a dog, they would draw Barney. Even in the city, he moves around without problems, even though he is blind. When he enters a new place, he maps it out on his own. He had been hosted in a house for a month, and from the second day, he found the garden where he always went to the bathroom, and he learned the house from the outside and inside. What someone who adopts a blind dog should pay attention to is the proper guidance outside - stairs, changes in level on the ground, obstacles that he cannot see. Barney has learned the word "watch out" from us and can learn others (right, left, etc.) Another thing that needs attention is moving furniture around the house and placing objects on the floor - a spoon, for example, that you temporarily have nowhere to put, will be an obstacle for Barney that can make him fall since he will have learned the house from the outside and will attempt to pass without realizing something is in front of him.It helps him a lot to hear his handler's voice, especially when he is outside and in a place he does not know. In the shelter, we always introduce him to puppies. He tolerates them very well, which is rare for an adult dog; he puts them in their place very effectively when necessary, and once, when he didn’t understand us and it was evening, we saw him sleeping with one of the puppies curled up on him like it was normal. The communication that most dogs understand. What he essentially says is, "Watch out, keep your distance." At home, although he is affectionate, he is quite independent; he stays and relaxes by himself, and when you come back from work, he might come to greet you and then go back to lie down in his spot. He truly is a wonderful creature. You will fall in love with his smile, you will love his pure soul, and you will live with him harmoniously and sweetly.

About Barney

What life with Barney looks like

Barney is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Save a Greek Stray in Metsovo.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Blind - requires guidance outdoors, consistent home layout, verbal cues for navigation

🇬🇷Adopting from Greece

Greek shelters often partner with Northern European rescue groups for placements. Animals are sterilized, vaccinated, and chipped before adoption. Fees vary widely depending on whether the shelter is municipal or NGO-run.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barney, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barney?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Save a Greek Stray handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barney on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barney if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Save a Greek Stray will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barney already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barney isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Save a Greek Stray early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barney and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
