Barry

Male

Barry is about 2.5 years old and has been living at the animal shelter for the Homeless Animals "Promyk" since November 2024. Found on Oliwkowej Street, this is a large, young, energetic dog full of emotions and a great need for closeness with a human. From the start, Barry was revealed as a very spirited and untrained dog. In the first few weeks at the animal shelter, emotions completely took over — he jumped around, bit at the leash, had trouble with quietness, and knew nothing of the rules of peaceful coexistence with humans. This was not due to bad intentions or aggression. Barry simply had never learned safe communication and controlling emotions. He has made great progress. Barry very strongly needs contact with humans. When someone approaches his kennel, he immediately transforms into a sensitive cuddler — seeking attention, closeness, and contact. It’s clear that he desperately wants relationships and attaches to people who show him patience and calmness very quickly. At the same time, he still remains a young, strong dog with a high level of excitement. Sometimes, upon entering the kennel, emotions can take over — Barry can jump, grab the leash, or react impulsively. This is still more an emotional chaos than any aggression. Barry needs further work, clear rules, and a person who can help him learn peaceful functioning. This is a very intelligent and human-oriented dog. In the right home, he has a huge potential to become a loyal, sensitive, and incredibly devoted companion. Quick pick: about 2.5 years old, CIP number: 616093902903354, large dog (around 30 kg), vaccinated, very contact-seeking and emotional, requires further work on emotions, improving with the leash, yearning for human closeness, for a conscious and patient caregiver. Barry needs a quiet, stable home ready for work with a young dog still learning the world. This animal was abandoned.

PL·Show original

To duży, młody pies pełen emocji, energii i ogromnej potrzeby bliskości z człowiekiem. About Barry

What life with Barry looks like

Barry is a large adult dog waiting at Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk in Gdansk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barry, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barry?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barry on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barry if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barry already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barry isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barry and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
