DOG MELON OK. 11 YEARS 616093901273925 (274/20) SIZE: LARGE VACCINATIONS: YES neutering: YES ALDAZ QUICK DRAW: – dog brought in from an intervention in Radys – mistrustful, deeply withdrawn, working on building trust – half his life spent in a cramped kennel, the world to him is a constant stream of new things – ignores other dogs – does well in rooms – he will sometimes bite things left on him or in his kennel – needs a Aware Handler to work on the complexities of dog emotions Hello, my name is Melon, but for 6 years prior to coming to Promyka, I was known as 5.398. I arrived at Promyka from the infamous Radys – places where dogs were made to work, so residents like me were very useful. During the intervention in Radys, it was said that I had never left the kennel where I was found. For 6 years, I was confined to a kennel that eroded my character, my personality, my ego… 6 years. A lot of time. Most of my life. And though I am large, strong, and always knew how to make use of my teeth, when the new came and I left my kennel… I was scared, shrank, and disappeared right in the middle of myself. At Promyka, I tried to return to my old ways – be a scary, threatening dog, to which no one would come near to touch their skin. I tried, but… no one here wanted to allow that. I had to bare my fear, uncertainty. My ignorance, confusion, and wildness in the face of the human world. And they used it. They used it and showed me how to live with that confusion. How to trust human knowledge. How to open up to the outside world. They showed me that growling and baring teeth wouldn’t make the world better – they were just a guarantee that the world didn’t want to come near me. Now I work. I trust a wider group of people. I discover new places, tastes, scents. I discover the world and reintroduce myself to it. I know a little about myself. I know that I like scratching under my chin. I know that I like to sniff grass, even the dead winter grass. I know that I am an observer and tend to be careful with my judgments and actions. I know that human is a support. I know that I can be stubborn and persistent when something matters to me. I know that I love to eat and that… I should probably lose a few pounds. I know that I deserve a Home. A home that first understands me and only then loves me with all my experiences. A home that understands the stage I am at and provides me with optimal conditions for further development. Could this be your Home? Waiting, Melon I was virtually adopted by: Wiola and Szymon.

Szmat czasu. Większość mojego życia. I choć jestem wielki, silny i z zębów pożytek zawsze umiałem zrobić, to kiedy nadeszło nowe i wyszedłem z mojego boksu… struchlałem, zmalałem i zniknąłem w samym środku samego siebie. Swoją niewiedzę, zagubienie i dzikość w obliczu ludzkiego świata. I oni to wykorzystali.

About MELON

What life with MELON looks like

MELON is a large senior dog waiting at Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk in Gdansk.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting MELON, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about MELON?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw MELON on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt MELON if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is MELON already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if MELON isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Promyk Gdańsk early rather than rehoming privately; they know MELON and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
