Adopt Basko

Belgian Malinois · Male · Adult · 8 years

The lovable Basko came into the animal shelter as a drop-off dog. Before that, he was kept as a guard dog with his brother on a scrap yard. Having never learned about the world beyond the fence, he is quite overwhelmed by environmental stimuli. However, the insecure male dog adjusts very well to people and walks obediently on a drooping leash. There is certainly room for improvement in terms of education. At the animal shelter, Basko shows friendliness towards both people and fellow animals. He is very clingy, likes to snuggle, and would like to be with someone all the time. After acclimatization, being alone should be possible. We primarily seek an outdoor living situation for him, as he is not familiar with living in an apartment. A well-insulated and heated hut must of course be available. Since he is very people-oriented, a family connection must be ensured. Additionally, a social partner should be present or in planning. An optimal living situation would be a large property on which he can keep an eye. This should be high and securely fenced, as he is capable of climbing fences. Baskos new owners should primarily offer him security and be motivated to show him the world. Health precautions: Which vaccinations are necessary, and what can I do to ensure my dog a long and healthy life? You can get an initial overview in this video. Feeding tips: Watch this video if you want to learn more about the right feeding for your dogs. The video is meant to summarize the most important information. We are of course available for further information.

About Basko

What life with Basko looks like

Basko is a large adult belgian malinois dog waiting at Tierheim Hannover in Hannover.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires outdoor housing with secure high fencing, needs companion dog, overwhelmed by environmental stimuli, requires patient introduction to the world

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hannover handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hannover will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hannover early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
