Benji

Yorkshire Terrier · Male · Adult · 7 years

Benji is currently settling better in a quieter part of site in one of our off view kennels as he can struggle with the hustle and bustle of centre life. He has struggled to settle enough to show us his playful side yet and can be quite vigilant out on walks, but hopefully given the time to settle in a quiet home he will be able to relax and his true character can start to shine through. Benji was previously living in a house with multiple other dogs who did not get on. Because of this he can become quite vocal and frustrated when he sees other dogs, however he has been able to walk alongside some calm and quiet dogs. He would benefit from continued slow and careful socialisation, but this should be done by adults only and following guidance from our training and behaviour team to set him up for the best chance of success. Benji would love a calm and quiet home where he can settle in and finally enjoy some of life's little luxuries. Benji is looking for a home where he can be the only pet and where any children are of high school age. He will need somebody at home for most of the day to help him with some house training and basic training. Benji will need adopters who are willing to visit him here at the centre a few times to build a bond before going home. Benji is somewhat of an escape artist so he will a need a very secure garden, as he will find little holes to escape through, and potentially a baby gate to keep him away from the front door! Benji came to us quite underweight and with his skin in very poor condition so is currently on extra meals and medicated baths which may need to be continued.

About Benji

What life with Benji looks like

Benji is a adult yorkshire terrier dog waiting at Dogs Trust Merseyside in Liverpool.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Benji, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Benji?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Merseyside handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Benji on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Benji if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Merseyside will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Benji already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Benji isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Merseyside early rather than rehoming privately; they know Benji and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
