Blacky

Giant Schnauzer · Male · Adult · 7 years

Blacky lived as a puppy with a family in Romania, who abandoned him when he grew too big. From then on, he lived in front of a house where he was fed regularly for about a year, but was not accepted by the three large dogs already living there, as they did not accept other dogs in the house. The medium-sized male dog was vaccinated and neutered in Romania by engaged animal welfare activists and has been with us at the animal shelter since November 9, 2019. Blacky is a confident, active male dog who often doesn’t know where to channel his energy. He enjoys the company of his trusted people and also likes to snuggle when he wants to relax. He demands cuddles and treats and reacts unhappily if not immediately noticed or attended to. With strangers, he is skeptical and is good at watching his people and his kennel. Blacky shares an exercise run with a young female dog, with whom he gets along well. When it comes to food, he has no sense of humor; he doesn’t share and will also defend it. The young male dog likes to go for walks and pulls on the leash, especially when there’s wild in sight. He has a prey drive that requires working on. Blacky needs clear structures and rules to orient himself by, as otherwise, he will take the initiative and make his own decisions. We are looking for dog-experienced people who will lovingly but consistently train him and keep him both physically and mentally stimulated. About Blacky

What life with Blacky looks like

Blacky is a medium-sized adult giant schnauzer dog waiting at Riesenschnauzernothilfe in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Blacky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Blacky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Riesenschnauzernothilfe handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Blacky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Blacky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Riesenschnauzernothilfe will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Blacky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Blacky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Riesenschnauzernothilfe early rather than rehoming privately; they know Blacky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
