In March 2023, six sows were once again saved from slaughter. I, Bruni, was one of the lucky ones. We, the breeding sows, lived our lives as breeding machines for "mature pigs." My poor companions and I were inseminated for the first time at six months old (!) and after three weeks and three days, we gave birth to up to 20 piglets. Every time after the abrupt weaning of the piglets (which happens twice a year), we were then injected with PMSG. PMSG stands for Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin and is a hormone produced in the placenta of pregnant horses. When the fertility hormone is injected into female pigs, it allows their cycle to be controlled. A few days later, the sows become dazed, and the cycle of insemination begins once again. Horses also suffer for the production of this hormone; they are subjected to having up to 5 liters of blood drawn weekly through a cannula in their neck for ten weeks. Most of the PMSG is currently obtained on Iceland. Denmark and Germany are considered the most important consumers. So not only do we sows suffer terribly for the production of pork, but horses do as well. I get to enjoy my life here in Erflinghausen with my companion, Pinky. Im März 2023 konnten noch einmal sechs Sauen vor der Schlachtung bewahrt werde. Ich, die Bruni, war eine der Glücklichen. Wir Zuchtsauen, fristeten unser Dasein als Gebärmaschinen für „Mastschweine“. Meine armen Gefährtinnen und ich wurden teilweise (je nach Größe) schon im Alter von sechs Monaten(!) zum ersten Mal besamt und brachten nach drei Monaten drei Wochen und drei Tagen bis zu 20 Ferkel zur Welt. Jedes Mal nach dem abrupten Absetzen der Ferkel (also zweimal im Jahr) wurde uns dann das Hormon PMSG gespritzt. PMSG bedeutet Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin und ist ein Hormon, das trächtige Pferde in ihrer Plazenta produzieren. Wird das Fruchtbarkeitshormon weiblichen Schweinen gespritzt, lässt sich damit ihr Zyklus steuern. Ein paar Tage später werden die Sauen rauschig und mit der Besamung beginnt der traurige Kreislauf von Neuem. Auch Pferde müssen für die Produktion dieses Hormons leiden, ihnen wird über eine Kanüle im Hals wöchentlich auf einmal bis zu 5 Liter Blut abgenommen und das zehn Wochen lang. Das meiste PSMG wird heute auf Island gewonnen. Dänemark und Deutschland gelten als die wichtigsten Abnehmer. Nicht nur wir Schweine leiden also ganz furchtbar für die Produktion von Schweinefleisch, sondern auch Pferde. Ich darf mein Leben zusammen mit meiner Gefährtin Pinky hier in Erflinghausen genießen.
