Caramelo

Podenco · Male · Young · 1 year

Triple A Benelux: Input June 12, 2026: Caramelo is a Podenco who was taken in from an existing home by his owner. Apparently, the owner had too many difficulties finding a home that allowed dogs. Caramelo arrived in good condition at our shelter, well-fed and with a good-looking coat. We were naturally very pleased, as Podencos usually arrive in much worse condition. Caramelo was, of course, quite stressed and anxious upon arrival. We suspect he was the only dog in the home where he lived. Since Podencos thrive in a social group, they do better in a pack of dogs. Caramelo was overjoyed when he got to meet other Podencos and now lives together with a young female Podenco. The two are very affectionate and play and run peacefully together. We would most prefer a home where one or more dogs are already waiting for him to start a new life together. He could be adopted as the only dog, but only on the condition that Caramelo has regular social contact with other dogs. This is truly a must for his social and emotional needs, a companion. At this moment, we do not know how Caramelo will fare in a busier environment. We will test this by taking him on outings to busier places. We prefer a location not too far from nature and with a safe outdoor space. Caramelo is really a cool guy. He does need some time to feel comfortable in new situations and with new people, but his playful and affectionate nature comes out very quickly. He also walks well on a leash. What makes Caramelo special is his curly (pig) tail. Normally, a Podenco does not have a curly tail, so if Caramelo is with other Podencos, you can spot him easily. Since Caramelo came from a domestic environment, we assume he is well-socialized and believe he will adapt relatively quickly to a new home. Caramelo is ready for his move. Let us know if you are ready to give this angel a home where he can stay forever.

About Caramelo

What life with Caramelo looks like

Caramelo is a medium-sized young adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Caramelo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Caramelo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Caramelo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Caramelo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Caramelo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Caramelo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Caramelo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
