Charlie

Shih Tzu · Male · Senior · 9 years

Meet Charlie! Charlie is looking for a patient and understanding forever home. Charlie can be a little nervous when meeting new people and may bark initially. He needs someone who understands that he simply needs a little time to feel safe and comfortable. With patience, gentle encouragement and a few tasty treats, Charlie will soon start to come around and show you what a sweet boy he really is. Once he knows you, Charlie is an affectionate and loving little chap who absolutely adores a good belly rub. Charlie enjoys going out for walks and is good on the lead, making walks a lovely part of his routine. He can be nervous around loud or unexpected noises, so he would benefit from an owner who will build his confidence gradually and never rush him. Charlie does have a luxating patella. At present, this isn’t causing him any problems and he is comfortable, but it is something his future adopter will need to be aware of and monitor. He may require pain relief as he gets older if it begins to cause him discomfort. Charlie needs a calm, patient and understanding owner who will give him the time he needs to settle and build trust. He isn’t a dog who should be rushed into new situations or expected to be confident straight away. If you’re willing to let Charlie come out of his shell at his own pace, you’ll discover the sweet, affectionate boy underneath the nervousness. Charlie has lots of love to give and deserves a peaceful forever home where he can feel safe, loved and understood. Charlie has interacted with other dogs while in our care, initially he can be a bit barky but does settle down and has interacted with them well, although he does prefer a calmer female. So we feel he could potentially live with a calm female of similar size following a successful meet and greet. (must be neutered). As Charlie came into the home as a stray, we have no previous history on him and as he can be a little nervous and unsure we feel he would be best rehomed with children 14+ years.

About Charlie

What life with Charlie looks like

Charlie is a small senior shih tzu dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charlie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charlie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charlie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charlie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charlie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charlie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charlie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
