Chess

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Information: In January, March, June, and October 2025, some of our team members visited Elisa's animal shelter in Romania, with which we work closely. They got to know many pups and some adult dogs by sitting in the kennels, playing, cuddling, and walking with them. Only the dogs we expect will be happy in the Netherlands - and their adopters with the dog - are matched by us. During our visit to the animal shelter in June 2025, Chess was one of the young adult dogs that our team members got to know better. He is enthusiastic, cheerful, and wants to get out of the kennel run so much! He reacts very well to other (off-leash) dogs, he wants to make contact. He walks nicely on a leash, especially considering that he is not yet used to it. He is food motivated, so he is probably easy to train. Nice Chess, with his 24-carat gold heart, does not only want to get out of the kennel run, but also very much wants to go home! Who will give Chess this chance? Unfortunately, he didn't bring his coat color. Strange but true: Black dogs are placed less quickly. The hard reality means that he is therefore less placeable. While this nice dog would be so happy if he could experience sunsets with his own owner. And of course, he would also like to have many other adventures together. More information about this phenomenon can be found in our article Black Dogs - Why Do They Have a Harder Time Finding Adoption? Chess is ready to travel. When a suitable adopter or foster family appears, our foundation arranges the transport with approved and professional pet transportation. The dogs are each brought home to their foster address or their permanent home. We hope that we can quickly book a one-way trip to the Netherlands for this nice, happy dog! In Romania itself, the dogs have no chance...

About Chess

What life with Chess looks like

Chess is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Straydogs Rescue Nederland in RC Nieuwe Pekela.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chess, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chess?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Straydogs Rescue Nederland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chess on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chess if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Straydogs Rescue Nederland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chess already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chess isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Straydogs Rescue Nederland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chess and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
