Saying it is a group of researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital who conducted a neuroimaging experiment on various women, mothers of children aged between 2 and 10 years old, and owners of pets, to whom brain activity was monitored while they were shown pictures of their animals and their children. The study showed that women had the same reactions to animals as they did to their children, and sometimes showed more empathy towards animals than their children. Many previous studies have found that levels of oxytocin - a neuro-hormone involved in pair bonding and also in maternal attachment - increase after interaction with pets, but these brain imaging studies will clarify the neurobiological basis of the relationship. In any case, it is already possible to respond to those who do not have pets or are not attracted to them by stating that those who treat their pet as a child... are not crazy! And in times when politics itself promotes obscurantism that has produced the "World Family Congress" in Verona, it's good to reiterate that there are many types of families, including those composed of humans and animals. Because many of us think just like that train conductor of Italo, who, arriving at Verona station last Saturday, greeted passengers by reminding them that: "Family is where there is love!"

A dirlo è un gruppo di ricercatori del Massachusetts General Hospital che ha condotto un esperimento di neuroimaging su diverse donne, madri di figli di età compresa tra i 2 ed i 10 anni e proprietarie di animali, alle quali è stata monitorata l’attività celebrale mentre venivano loro mostrate le foto dei loro animali e dei loro bambini. Lo studio ha mostrato che le donne hanno avuto per gli animali le stesse reazioni che hanno avuto per i loro bambini, anzi a volte hanno mostrato più empatia per gli animali che per i figli. Molti studi precedenti hanno scoperto che i livelli di ossitocina – un neuro-ormone coinvolto nel legame di coppia e anche nell'attaccamento materno – aumentano dopo l’interazione con animali domestici, ma queste ricerche di imaging cerebrale finiranno con lo spirgare le basi neurobiologiche della relazione. In ogni caso, già adesso è possibile replicare a coloro che non hanno animali o non ne sono attratti che chi, invece, tratta il proprio animale domestico come un figlio…non è un pazzo! E in tempi in cui anche la politica cavalca l'oscurantismo che ha prodotto il “congresso mondiale delle famiglie” di Verona, fa bene ribadire che ci sono tanti tipi di famiglie, compresa quella composta da umani e animali. Perchè tanti di noi la pensiamo proprio come quel capotreno di Italo che, arrivando sabato scorso alla stazione di Verona, ha salutato i passeggeri ricordando che: “Famiglia è dove c'è amore”!
