Adopt Un vero “superdog”: sopravvive a torsione, ischemia e seminoma

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 15 years

In February 2016, he overcame a torsion, six months ago he recovered from a rather serious cerebral ischemia, and in recent days he has been recovering well from the removal, during the same surgery, of a testicular tumor. Two years ago, it was certainly the excellent medical intervention of APACA's trusted veterinarian that saved him, but even the skill of the best professional would have been useless if the animal shelter's responsible person, during her usual morning round through the cages, had not noticed the first, mild signs of discomfort, which would have become fatal after a few hours. Similarly quick was the transport to the veterinarian when, about six months ago, the dog was struck by a cerebral ischemia, with difficulty standing, orientation problems, nystagmus (uncontrolled and rapid eye movement), and vomiting. After a few days of treatment, the dog fully recovered: obviously, he spent the entire winter in the animal shelter's infirmary and this circumstance certainly contributed to his complete recovery. Finally, a few weeks ago, a swelling appeared on one testicle and the diagnosis confirmed it was a testicular neoplasm, exactly a seminoma. Operated on Thursday, March 15, the dog was in a guarded prognosis for 72 hours, after which (actually a few hours earlier) he regained all his energy. But what dog are we talking about? We are telling about Arex, a large mixed-breed dog, at the animal shelter since October 5, 2014, who is now a remarkable 15 years old! A real "superdog," with an exceptional constitution, as well as assisted by good luck. Given his age, his conditions remain obviously precarious and it is unknown how much longer he may live, but one thing is certain: this old dog, who has spent most of his life tied to a chain, will not lack care and attention. Because, in our opinion, elderly dogs like Arex have the same right to life and dignity as young dogs, a right that never expires and only disappears with death, which, one hopes, can always be free of unnecessary suffering.
