All the newspapers, television channels and blogs around the world have reported it: dogs will return to the White House. Indeed, Joe Biden, the elected president of the United States, will bring with him Champ, 12 years old, and Major, adopted two years ago from the Delaware Humane Association dog shelter. Truly good news for all those who love animals and, together with them, all other more vulnerable beings. Many times we have emphasized the benefits of living with a pet and - as our duty - we have always highlighted the emotional and cultural enrichment that even an adoption from a dog shelter brings. During the election campaign, dogs have certainly helped Biden reach the 79 million American families that own a pet; but often behind an announcement, there is also a bit of the personality of the person making it. The White House welcomes a person very different from Trump. He is 78 years old and a moderate Democrat who in 2016, grieving the death of one of his two sons from a brain tumor, refused to run for the presidency that he has now won. He is in favor of climate protection and the preservation of civil rights. Thus, the four perhaps most divisive years in American history are coming to an end: the years of arrogance, lack of empathy towards the weakest, and closure to diversity. For the USA, but also for much of the world, a new era is beginning, starting from a female Vice President, Afro-Indo-Caribbean, and... from an adopted dog - the first adopted dog to enter the rooms and lawns reserved for the president of Americans! - that an old politician named Biden will bring to the White House.

Lo hanno raccontanto tutti i giornali, le tv e i blog del mondo: i cani torneranno alla Casa Bianca. Infatti, Joe Biden, presidente eletto degli Stati Uniti, porterà con sè Champ di 12 anni, e Major, adottato due anni fa dal canile della Delaware Humane Association. Davvero una buona notizia per tutti quelli che amano gli animali e, insieme a loro, tutti gli altri esseri più deboli. In tante occasioni abbiamo sottolineato i benefici del vivere con un animale da compagnia e – com’è nostro dovere – abbiamo sempre sottolineato l’arricchimento emotivo e culturale che anche un’adozione dal canile porta con sè. In campagna elettorale i cani sono certamente serviti a Biden per raggiungere i 79 milioni di famiglie americane che possiedono un animale domestico: ma spesso dietro a un annuncio, c'è anche un po' della personalità dell'uomo che lo fa. Alla Casa Bianca arriva una persona molto diversa da Trump . Ha 78 anni ed è un democratico moderato che nel 2016, provato dalla morte per tumore al cervello di uno dei due figli, ha rifiutato di candidarsi a quella presidenza che oggi ha conquistato. E' favorevole alla difesa del clima e alla salvaguardia dei diritti civili. Stanno, dunque, per finire i quattro anni forse più divisivi della storia americana: gli anni dell'arroganza, dell’assenza di empatia verso i più deboli e della chiusura alla diversità.
