Chico

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Young · 2 years

Chico is a sweet and cheerful dog who is 2.5 years old. His previous owner was no longer able to care for him, so we’re looking for a new home for him. Chico is a bit shy around new people, but once he gets to know you, he becomes incredibly affectionate. At 33 kilograms, he can sometimes be a bit clumsy in his behavior—for example, he tends to jump up on you rather roughly. Ultimately, Chico is a very loyal dog who thoroughly enjoys the company of his human(s). He loves going for walks, though he could still use some training in this area. A new owner will therefore need to dedicate sufficient time to helping him learn. While walking, he tends to pull on the leash, but he’s eager to learn. He doesn’t yet know many Dutch commands because he comes from Portugal. Being left alone at home is very difficult for him; he’ll start barking and sometimes even get into mischief. This will need to be gradually addressed. Chico could live with a stable, calm dog, but he’s not used to living with cats. With small children, he’d probably be too rough. He has juvenile cataracts. Right now, he’s not experiencing any symptoms, but in the future, this condition could cause his vision to deteriorate.

About Chico

What life with Chico looks like

Chico is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Dierenasiel De Bevelanden in AE Goes.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel De Bevelanden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel De Bevelanden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel De Bevelanden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
