Adopt Conroy

Pit Bull Terrier · Male · Adult · 4 years

Weight: 36 kg; Shoulder height: ~ 57 cm; Important in brief: Conroy is a very self-confident and independent male dog. He has a very quick learning ability and tests his human strongly. In conflicts, which usually arise in status issues and with resources (especially food), he shows little shyness and can even injure people he knows. Therefore, wearing a muzzle is necessary in many situations. With a good bond to his human, Conny now holds back better in critical situations than shortly after his arrival in February 2024 and communicates more before "going to the ceiling", but one is not safe from injuries this way. Situational behavior can still be triggered. Therefore, Conny can only be rehomed into a household where there is a great deal of experience in safely handling dogs like him. Due to Conroy's incredible eagerness to please and his enjoyment of learning, he really enjoys tasks that challenge his mind. For example, he thrives during trick training, hide-and-seek, and intelligence games. This has the advantage that one can easily build a bond. Conny shows aggressive behavior towards strangers near his room, but ignores them outside as long as they behave naturally. He is always led with a muzzle in critical situations and outside the shelter grounds. Walking on a leash, Conny does very well and politely. He likes to walk and shows good leash control. He passes by people, animals, and traffic unbothered. If provoked by other dogs, he may bark back briefly. Conny shows an ambivalent behavior towards other animals. He can be excited and happy upon contact and then also switch to aggressive behavior depending on the situation. If another dog is already present, one must gradually assess how compatible the dogs are. However, we assume with high probability that Conny is better off as a single dog at the moment. Conny travels well and gladly in the car. Conny is house-trained. Being alone is likely possible after acclimation. Conny is alert and loudly reports noises in the surroundings. Please write us an email with your phone number and a short description of yourself if you are interested.

About Conroy

What life with Conroy looks like

Conroy is a large adult pit bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Conroy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Conroy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Conroy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Conroy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Conroy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Conroy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Conroy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
