Costi e benefici di avere un cane

Mixed Breed · Unknown

A Hungarian study addresses both the benefits and costs of owning a dog. A recent study by a group of researchers from the Department of Ethology at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, published on the online journal Springer Nature Link, focused on a specific topic: measuring the perceived costs and benefits by a sample of Hungarian dog owners, generally satisfied with their dogs (we use the term "owner" throughout the article to accurately report the research results, although obviously it is not the term we prefer, ed.). People who own a dog inevitably link their presence to the benefits for their physical and mental well-being. However, the researchers say, the psychological and practical needs of caring for a dog can have a significant impact on the owner's quality of life and affect the long-term success of the relationship between dog and owner. The study found that the too-short lifespan of dogs is the aspect of the relationship experienced most negatively, while the aspect evaluated as most positive by the owners was the belief that dogs "illuminate" their lives. On average, owners tend to perceive more advantages than disadvantages in owning a dog, with six themes classified as "benefits" and only three as "costs." 61% of the owners rated the significant relationship with their dog as highly beneficial, mentioning primarily the dog's constant presence, love, and support. 31% indicated as a very positive aspect that having a dog improves their lifestyle, encouraging physical exercise and outdoor activities and bringing stability and existential structure. Finally, 15% indicated as a positive aspect the relationship with another species and the intrinsic qualities of the dog, highlighting the biophilia effect - the psychological human need to seek connections with nature and living organisms, which has positive effects on health and well-being - linked to the presence of a dog in one's life. Regarding the costs, 95% of those interviewed indicated financial expenses - particularly those related to health - as the most significant disadvantage, while only 4-5% mentioned emotional or practical burdens associated with owning a dog. The real added value of the study is to have pointed out a true need: "the importance of publicly addressing not only the positive effects of coexistence with dogs, but also the numerous challenges related to their ownership," since only by looking at both aspects (benefits and costs) can we reduce "the gap between expectations and reality and improve the lives of both people and (especially, ed.) animals."
