Adopt Cuba /aka "Cübelchen"

Mixed Breed Cat · Male · Adult · 5 years

Cuba, our beautiful German Deutscher German Shepherd — yes, he knows that very well. He is still in his prime years and wants to work. Lying around lazily? Not on his watch. Sniffing work makes him happy, and he could also fulfill his potential in dog sports. Simply put: Cuba knows what he is and what he can do! He has a big ego that must be handled with care. He is very mistrustful of strangers, so a long getting-to-know-you phase is necessary with him! Starting with pressure from the beginning, you have already lost. You need a good sense and a calm, sovereign presence. But if you win his trust and work on it, you have a loyal German Shepherd by your side who cannot be bribed with treats or the like. In his off-leash time, he shows a pronounced territorial behavior, and he also does not tolerate every person. He does this very obviously without using his teeth. We have accustomed him to a muzzle, which was initially unfamiliar to him. Now, however, he wears it perfectly. When the vet comes, he of course does not find that super. But with his primary caregiver, he does it well. In dog contact, he likes to show his macho and wants to clearly dominate. With a really sovereign, equal female dog, we could also envision Cuba as a second dog. This requires a high level of management. A male dog is definitely out of the question! Since Cuba is not a dog who stands for intimate snuggling sessions, there should be no children in the household, as well as no other animals — he would hunt them. We wish for him experienced people who have a good sense for serious German Shepherds. Additionally, he would definitely need a house with a large, securely fenced yard. shoulder height ca.

About Cuba /aka "Cübelchen"

What life with Cuba /aka "Cübelchen" looks like

Cuba /aka "Cübelchen" is a large adult mixed breed cat dog waiting at Tierheim Heppenheim in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cuba /aka "Cübelchen", answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cuba /aka "Cübelchen"?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Heppenheim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cuba /aka "Cübelchen" on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cuba /aka "Cübelchen" if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Heppenheim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cuba /aka "Cübelchen" already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cuba /aka "Cübelchen" isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Heppenheim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cuba /aka "Cübelchen" and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
