Adopt Dakota

Golden Retriever · Female · Adult · 6 years

Dakota is wary of strangers. With known and familiar people, she is friendly, trusting, and obedient. She runs well on a leash and travels comfortably in the car. Dakota is stressed at the animal shelter. She is more of an introvert, looking for peace, affection, and cuddles from the volunteer helpers. She loves walks – during which she shows her true nature: calm, social, loving, and people-oriented. She is obedient and enjoys being brushed. She also masters car rides with ease. We are convinced that she would be a faithful and enchanting companion in a loving home. Dakota was found by a woman but could not take care of her. Therefore, she brought Dakota to Melampo. No owners could be found. At first, she was fearful and shy, wanting to maintain her safe distance from people and other dogs. Dakota has integrated well, gaining more trust, and now she often snuggles with the volunteer helpers. She loves being cuddled and having her fur brushed. She seeks the proximity of familiar people but remains wary of strangers. She loves going for walks and runs well on a leash. She is clean in her enclosure and orderly, never messing up her blankets or beds. She gets along with male and female dogs. She always seeks peace and dislikes chaos, noise, or when puppies play around. She avoids trouble and does not like causing trouble either. The Mediterranean diseases were thankfully tested negative by the vet. We think Dakota needs a quiet home, preferably without other dogs or children that could disturb her. If Dakota gets her retreat and freedom from problems and uncertainty, then one gets a lovable dog and a faithful, affectionate, and obedient companion.

About Dakota

What life with Dakota looks like

Dakota is a adult golden retriever dog waiting at Melampo in Melampo.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dakota, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dakota?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Melampo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dakota on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dakota if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Melampo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dakota already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dakota isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Melampo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dakota and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
