Meet Dexter! A resilient, intelligent working-line German Shepherd rescued from the streets of Serbia. ⚧️ Sex: Male 🎂 Age: Approx. 3/4 years old 🦴 Breed: Working-line German Shepherd 📏 Size: Large 🐱 Cat friendly: No 🐕 Dog friendly: Gets along with larger females and some smaller dogs, not suitable with dominant males 👶 Child friendly: Not suitable for homes with small children ⚡ Energy level: Active 🏡 Ideal home: An experienced, adult home with secure outdoor space and a structured lifestyle 📖 Dexter’s Story 📖 Dex is a striking black working-line German Shepherd who has come a long way from the streets of rural Serbia. Once part of a family of street dogs we fed daily, Dex was the father of a vulnerable litter. When local villagers began poisoning street dogs, we acted quickly. While we sadly couldn’t save them all, we managed to rescue Dex and his only surviving pup, Benny . From the moment he arrived in our care, Dex’s strength and resilience were clear. Testing revealed heartworm, which is currently being treated. He is nearing full recovery and will be ready to travel once his results are clear. Rescued in May 2025, Dex has been thriving under the care of his dedicated handlers. With regular training sessions, structure, and consistent support, he has made wonderful progress. As he began to feel safe, Dex started playing like a puppy, finally free to relax and enjoy life. His affectionate and clever nature is shining through more each day and his training continues to develop week by week. By the time he is adopted, Dex will be even more confident and prepared for his next chapter. Dex is a true working-line German Shepherd: intelligent, loyal and deeply devoted to his people. He has natural guarding instincts and takes his role seriously, making him a reliable protector of the home. Importantly, he is learning to read situations well and has shown that he understands when visitors are welcome.

About Dexter

What life with Dexter looks like

Dexter is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Whispaws Animal Sanctuary in Serbia (UK-managed).

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇷🇸Adopting from Serbia

The shelter typically completes the animal's vaccinations, microchipping, and pet passport before adoption. Specific fees and process details vary by shelter and country — confirm directly via the contact details in the sidebar.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dexter, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dexter?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Whispaws Animal Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dexter on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dexter if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Whispaws Animal Sanctuary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dexter already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dexter isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Whispaws Animal Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dexter and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (SR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
