Adopt Dexter

Podenco · Male · Senior · 10 years

Animal shelter Tenerife (Sabine) Update January 2, 2026: It was a difficult search to place Dexter and Marie together and the animal shelter was not a suitable place for these two loyal senior souls. A very suitable place was found for Marie, so it has been decided to let her be adopted. We hope that Dexter will then easily find a home of his own to enjoy his retirement. Update November 14, 2025: After much consideration, it has been decided that Dexter will also be put up for adoption along with his girlfriend Marie via Podencoworld. Marie is a podenco mix. Together they have always lived with an owner who unfortunately passed away. Dexter and Marie are therefore already used to having a home. They are both elderly and taking them apart at this age would be heartbreaking, so Dexter and Marie should be adopted together. Who will give these two lovely seniors a chance? Update November 5, 2025: A new video has been added along with new photos showing clearly Dexter's bond with Marie. Input October 31, 2025: Our wonderful big kindhearted Dexter! He was adopted together with Marie (not a podenco), both as puppies almost 9 years ago. His owner passed away and so they came back to us. Dexter is a unique beautiful soul. From the outside with his nice shiny black "coat" but especially with his unchangeable kind and gentle character. There is simply nothing bad in him. He has a lovely uncomplicated character and likes being around people. Clumsiness or pushing himself is not in his vocabulary; this gentle giant is careful and kind to everyone. Even with this huge change and all the luxuries of a home he had to give up suddenly, he did wonderfully from minute one in the group. Dexter has been living with his girlfriend Marie for years, as shown in the video they have a lot of support for each other. Separating them would be very sad, but a retirement in an animal shelter is also not what we wish for Dexter. Hopefully they will both find a warm and loving home soon. Dexter is well socialized, can get along well with both female dog and dogs, can share perfectly and it's just a pleasure to have him around. In short, an uncomplicated, kind and pleasant companion who definitely belongs in a warm basket to enjoy many more beautiful years with his own human!

About Dexter

What life with Dexter looks like

Dexter is a senior podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dexter, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dexter?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dexter on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dexter if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dexter already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dexter isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dexter and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
