Duna

Podenco · Female · Adult · 8 years

Duna is a dog who hasn't had a fair chance in her life. She was adopted from an animal shelter in the north and quickly "passed on" to acquaintances who would have more time for her. Unfortunately, even though her owner loved her and wanted the best for her, she couldn't offer enough attention. Long days alone in the apartment made Duna miss her owner terribly and feel lonely. Slowly, she began to fade away, and a friend and dog trainer who walked her for her owner and is a volunteer at the shelter convinced the owner to make the difficult decision to bring her back to the shelter. Sometimes loving means letting go... and together we could find a better home and person for sweet Duna because that's what this girl craves! In the shelter, she got lost for a while but soon found a routine in the pack. She can get along with everyone, young and old. When challenged, she can play a bit but prefers to find a quiet corner to observe everything. She enjoys calm company but all that hustle and bustle, the excitement and noise... aren't her thing. Duna is clearly a people dog. She loves being close, likes going for walks in the village or grabbing something to eat on a terrace. She sits nicely next to you and watches everything quietly, clearly enjoying it. Sitting together on a bench in the park and watching the world go by... she can really enjoy that! In the mountains, she follows her nose, jumping from bush to bush looking for lizards, she has a great time there and doesn't pay attention to you until you want to walk again. In the village, she pays attention to her owner and walks nicely on a leash, enjoying new impressions and her surroundings. A demanding dog Duna isn't, not loud or clumsy, but it must be taken into account that she doesn't like being alone for too long, this will have to be built up carefully. Being left home alone for too long makes her unhappy and we don't want that again for her. Duna also loves cuddles, which she collects in her bed. She also loves high places and our old bench in the shelter is her favorite spot even though she often has to give it up to the busier and larger dogs who run over her. We are looking for a quiet home for Duna, preferably with people who work from home or can take her on nice walks. Having another calm dog friend at home is nice but not essential for this sweetheart. We hope Duna will soon get her well-deserved chance to prove what an incredibly loving, affectionate and sociable companion she is and finally enjoy real dog life.

About Duna

What life with Duna looks like

Duna is a medium-sized adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Duna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Duna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Duna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Duna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Duna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Duna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Duna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
