Dzumi

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

DzumiFemale dog, medium in size. Approx. 8. 5 years old (July 2026). A happy and calm dog who loves humans, including children, and other dogs. Meet DzumiDzumi was found by her rescuers in a blizzard during a hike in the woods, miles from the nearest village. It was January, minus 15 degrees outside, and she was found lying frozen in the snow and unable to walk. They brought her back to their cabin and put her in front of the fire and she slept for three days straight, only getting up to eat a little and to go outside to pee. She was very thin and disorientated, had an eye infection and seemed to struggle with her breathing, so her rescuers assumed she was old and would soon die. They were leaving Serbia and did not want to put Dzumi back out in the snow, so they asked Balkan Underdogs to take her in, to offer her somewhere peaceful to spend her last days. As it turned out, Dzumi was not so old! With the proper treatment and care, she bounced back. Dzumi has had to have a mastectomy as she was discovered with a tumour but is well on the road to recovery. Dzumi is such a wonderful calm and friendly dog. She loves other dogs and just seems to be happy to be alive. She's also great with children. Dzumi is spayed, vaccinated and negative on all tests bar showing a positive result for anaplasmosis, for which antibiotic treatment was started. Anaplasmosis is a fairly common tick-borne disease prevalent in countries such as the Balkans. It is treated with a course of 30 days of antibiotics which is sufficient according to vet advice received. Dzumi does not show any symptoms of anaplasmosis and has received his 30 day course of treatment. A useful information sheet on Anaplasmosis can be found here. Please contact the team if you have any questions. All our dogs are tested for the following prior to travel: Heartworm, Anaplasmosis, Erlichiosis, Lyme Disease, Brucellosis (since 11th June 2021). About Dzumi

What life with Dzumi looks like

Dzumi is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Balkan Underdogs in Tirana.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dzumi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dzumi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Balkan Underdogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dzumi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dzumi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Balkan Underdogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Dzumi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dzumi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Balkan Underdogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dzumi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
