Mixed Breed · Unknown

"Suddenly, a bright red spot appeared on the dog's upper lip, which the dog, visibly annoyed, kept licking constantly. The veterinarian fortunately ruled out a fungal infection, but still took some material for a culture test, which requires about ten days of waiting..." This is what a friend told us a few days ago, but this is a situation that often happens to those who have dogs and cats: spots, blisters or irritations appear and the mind immediately goes to fungal diseases, which are particularly contagious and can also be transmitted to humans. Returning home, our friend, however, mentally reviewed the last hours of the dog's activities and realized that the only thing that could have caused that red spot on the upper lip was... the latex from the figs that had fallen to the ground after a storm. A not very common diagnosis, immediately shared with the veterinarian and which, after a few days, will be strengthened by the negative result of the culture and by a healing without consequences. In reality, not everyone knows that fig latex is strongly irritating and can burn the skin, including that of a dog, which accidentally comes into contact with it by biting the fruit from the top. The urticant reaction is due to furanocoumarin and calcium oxalate crystals contained in the latex, which produce linear and well-defined bright red spots, often accompanied by painful symptoms. In addition to figs, other lattices cause toxic dermatitis: this is the case, for example, with some ranunculaceae, such as anemones and buttercups, but also with the latex that comes out from daisies, tulips and the bulbs of narcissus and hyacinths. Almost always, the problem is resolved with the application of soothing and anti-inflammatory creams. Good to know!

Bene a sapersi!
