Adopt Emma

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 2 years

Character: Emma is a great dog for someone who understands her and can guide her well. She is very affectionate and owner-oriented, and the support of her owner is very important to her in situations that she finds stressful. She is a sensitive dog who needs both plenty of rest and enough mental challenges. If you can offer all of this, you will have the most fantastic and devoted little friend by her side ❤️! Behavior at home: Emma is an affectionate dog who really enjoys attention and cuddling with her foster parents. For a young dog, she is calm and can entertain herself well. She is very eager to learn and smart, so she needs enough (mental) challenges. On the other hand, if you ask too much from her, she can become overstimulated and display less desirable behavior. Emma needs support in situations where she feels uncertain, and it is important that there is space and safety for her to learn. The balance between enough challenge and rest is therefore something to keep an eye on. Emma is alert and finds unfamiliar visitors very exciting. It helps her if you as an owner provide calmness and clarity for her in these situations. Once she knows people, it goes better, then she is very happy to see them. She is still young and has a shelter background; with patience and good guidance, there is certainly (self-)confidence to be gained for this girl. We would like to place Emma with a social, stable dog who can serve as a role model and make her more confident in new situations. Emma considers her food as hers, so she prefers to eat alone. Emma is too inconsistent in her reaction towards cats to be a good match for cats. She can sleep well next to them, but she also tends to act like a police officer towards them, for example not letting them come through the cat flap. Emma is housebroken and can stay alone at home for a while (together with the other dogs), although this will certainly have to be rebuilt again in a new environment. Behavior outside: Emma walks nicely, both on a leash and off. She stays close to the foster family during walks and keeps them well in sight. When meeting other dogs, she is initially cautious and seeks support from her handler, but once the ice is broken, she enjoys walking and playing together. New situations and unfamiliar people still excite her, we expect that there is still room for improvement with a lot of patience and the space to do things at her own pace. Car rides go well, she prefers to sit on someone's lap but can also sit in the back. She loves to go along!

About Emma

What life with Emma looks like

Emma is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Straydogs Rescue Nederland in RC Nieuwe Pekela.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Emma, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Emma?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Straydogs Rescue Nederland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Emma on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Emma if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Straydogs Rescue Nederland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Emma already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Emma isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Straydogs Rescue Nederland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Emma and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
