Ten whole years on the streets, in uncertainty, in cold and heat. Ten years waiting for a person who will finally say to her: “Come home.” Once hope had arrived. We’d managed to find her an adoption. For the first time, her life was going to change. She’d leave behind the streets, the dangers, and the loneliness. But that chance was lost. Hermione stayed here. And the years passed. Today she’s an elderly little dog, with seizures that require monitoring and care. Yet she still looks at us with trust. She still approaches people. She still hopes. She’s calm, sweet, and carries on her back all the weariness of a lifetime on the streets. We don’t know how many more years she’ll keep waiting. We don’t know if she’ll ever get to experience what it means to sleep in a warm home, to have a bed, to not fear winter or summer. What we do know is that she doesn’t deserve to grow old on a sidewalk. Hermione doesn’t ask for much. She doesn’t ask for walks every day, nor endless games. She asks for peace, safety, care, and a person who’ll give her the years she truly deserves. Maybe she’s no longer a puppy.
