Fernando

Male · Senior · 11 years

Origin: Linares (Andalusia) Location: foster home in Ilmenau (Thuringia) Character: loyal, clingy, watchful, a mother's child, not a cuddly dog (!), instead a real character with all that goes with it, bites without warning New home: only for experienced experts who accept him as he is, a quiet home with a garden, no children (!) This is what I can do: walk perfectly on a leash, respond to my name, be house trained, be left alone, wait for my food until it's my turn, play with toys, handle the big ones and take the new ones by the hand. Adoption fee 130 euros to foster home in Ilmenau / Thuringia! "Open your mouth for the silent and advocate for those who are abandoned..." (Francis of Assisi) Little treasure, your pictures made our breath stop. Your video recordings pierced our hearts like a knife. Your sad, helpless eyes looked deep into our souls, showing your unspeakable pain and the complete irresponsibility of humanity, in every form. If the earth would stand still for just one second for every suffering inflicted on an animal, it would never rotate around its own axis again... In the last March days of 2021, we found you in an unbelievable pitiful condition in a Spanish shelter. Here, your end was finally sealed, after a more than miserable life. Forgotten by the rest of the world, having nothing, almost losing even the last thing that remained - your life. You were certainly never a family member. Instead, you seem to have been helplessly vegetating somewhere in nowhere. Your call for help came just in time before the worst was done to you. You wouldn't have lasted much longer. Unfortunately, in your birth country, your breed is only used as a means to an end, and when no longer useful, discarded like trash. Your battered little body, the heavy infestation with endo- and ectoparasites as well as your various deficiency symptoms spoke volumes about the worst living conditions. And yet, according to the estimate of our local veterinarian at the time, you were just barely 6 years old (born according to passport January 2015)... Quickly you were brought to safety by our animal friends into their shelter in Linares / Southern Spain. Your then laboratory results showed the full extent, so that you had to go to the veterinary clinic immediately. You received infusions, various medications, and several deworming treatments, they fought for your life. Your condition was critical, the nasty parasites had already done too much, against which you probably had to fight half your life. So we promised you and our friends that as soon as you were able to travel, you would come into our care. Because for us it was clear, you would need a long, caring recovery period full of security and for that, despite the best medical care, their shelter was not the right place. Arrived in Germany in May 2021, we finally had you, poor little wretch, in our arms. The fight for your life could continue. Our friends sadly said: "Fernando has everything...", which unfortunately was true. It began a long fight, where we fought step by step forward, together with you. You suffered from severe anemia, all blood values were messed up, your inflammation values went through the roof and also all your organs had been seriously damaged by the parasites. We had to deal with mites, massive fungal infection (externally as well as internally), severe pyoderma and despite deworming, a tapeworm infestation that had almost destroyed your gastrointestinal tract and your liver. You suffered from malnutrition and severe periodontitis, so that your eyesight was already impaired and your teeth simply fell out.

About Fernando

What life with Fernando looks like

Fernando is a medium-sized senior dog waiting at Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) in Vilseck.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Fernando, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Fernando?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Fernando on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Fernando if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Fernando already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Fernando isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Fernando and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
