Adopt Fjell

Bernese Mountain Dog · Male · Young · 1 year

Fjell is a young Berner Sennenhund who came to our animal shelter due to a governmental seizure and subsequent abandonment declaration. As the young male dog had few opportunities to learn basic obedience and socialization in his previous environment, he currently meets us as somewhat insecure but very friendly with great potential for development. In direct contact with humans, Fjell shows an exceptional willingness to please and cooperativeness. He also proves to be very good-natured in his interactions with fellow animals of both sexes. While he reacts to static environmental stimuli with a general lack of reactivity, he still shows a clear need for catch-up during walks in terms of coordination and human orientation. Fjell often appears insecure in new situations and, due to his age, can be rather clumsy. He has not yet learned to control his body and weight – currently around 36 kg with an estimated final height of 65 cm – and has not yet developed the ability to use his physical presence effectively. Given his breed characteristics and behavior, Fjell is ideally suited for a life in the countryside, such as a classic farm dog on a secure area. He enjoys being outdoors and observing his surroundings but also requires a clear structure and a close family connection. Intensive work is still needed on his lead manners and basic obedience. Fjell therefore requires a confident and physically sturdy handler who can guide him through daily life with calmness and self-assurance despite his imposing appearance. Due to his impulsive nature, children in the new home should ideally have reached a stable age of around 10 years. Whether compatibility with other cats is given has not yet been tested. For Fjell, we are looking for engaged owners with a moderate level of experience who can dedicate the necessary time and patience to consistently foster this raw talent and give him the security he needs for stable development into a confident companion dog. Do you think you are the right person for Fjell or would you like to get to know him better?.

About Fjell

What life with Fjell looks like

Fjell is a extra-large young adult bernese mountain dog dog waiting at Tierschutzverein für Tirol in Innsbruck.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Fjell, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Fjell?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein für Tirol handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Fjell on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Fjell if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein für Tirol will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Fjell already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Fjell isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein für Tirol early rather than rehoming privately; they know Fjell and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
