Adopt Freddy

Maltese · Male · Young · 1 year

Freddy is a witty charmer who, unfortunately, is still completely overwhelmed by the big wide world. As he loudly comments on everything and cannot be left alone in the beginning, he should live in a rural area and not in a multi-family home. He wishes for young, active people who can explain to him with much calm and authority how relaxed life can be. Additionally, they should be motivated enough to keep him physically challenged. This means they must be able to master the balance between calmness, play, fun, and tension. Without guidance, he yells at everything that comes his way, runs aimlessly around, and forgets that he is supposed to be on a leash. Moreover, it is important not to give in to his cuteness. He is not suitable for beginners and is not a dog who just wants to sit comfortably on the sofa or go for a relaxed walk. For Freddy to be content and relaxed, he needs to be worked with. Although he has not learned much so far, he is very motivated and cooperative to change that. Otherwise, Freddy is cuddly, enjoys going for walks, and seems to have fun learning tricks. We imagine that free-shaping would be a hobby he would enjoy. Unfortunately, he needs eye ointment/eye drops every few hours, which he takes well. This can be well combined with a short walk to the door in the beginning, as he still needs to learn to be reliably house-trained. We can imagine him as a second dog, and with the right guidance, he can also be compatible with cats. Walks well on a leash.

About Freddy

What life with Freddy looks like

Freddy is a large young adult maltese dog waiting at Tierheim Hannover in Hannover.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires eye drops/ointment every few hours due to eye condition

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Freddy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Freddy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hannover handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Freddy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Freddy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hannover will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Freddy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Freddy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hannover early rather than rehoming privately; they know Freddy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
