Adopt Freya

Podenco · Female · Adult · 4 years

Animal Shelter Tenerife (Sabine) Update April 20, 2026: Freya has 9 new photos and a new video. This medium to small sized Podenco clearly stands out with her looks, she's absolutely a cutie! Input March 2, 2026: Freya is a small Podenco mix with a sad past. She came from a hunter where she was no longer useful together with her Podenco companions Chiripa and Muñeca. She lived in a dark cage, on a short chain and wasn't even used for the hunt, so even those few days of freedom didn't exist for her. Yet miraculously, Freya is not distrustful but rather friendly and social. She is incredibly kind, actively seeks us out and really enjoys any form of attention. Freya is a big cuddly bottom! Outside, Freya is not afraid at all. She approaches new impressions confidently and curiously. Actually, she doesn't know when to stop, as if she wants to make up for all that lost time on the chain, to discover everything, enjoy... live! We are currently doing daily walks and she enjoys them just like everything else. Still a bit like an unguided missile, she enthusiastically runs back and forth and then comes back again, once more very excitedly running off. She can't contain her happiness and this is quite hilarious sometimes, but we also try to slow her down for her own rest. Despite her endless enthusiasm and contagious happiness, it seems she has some bad experiences with people in the past, which occasionally reminds her of. For example, she sometimes gets scared by sudden movements and is a real "drama queen" if she is suddenly held or if you step on her foot by mistake. This breaks your heart and you don't know what to do to be "forgiven". Fortunately, she quickly becomes her crazy self again and soon enjoys life as if nothing had happened.Freya generally gets along well with other dogs. She lives with males and females, big and small. She gets along well with males. With females she is a bit more cautious and pickier, but can also get along well.Freya is an energetic, very people-oriented dog who has a lot more to offer and learn. For this sensitive, gentle but very enthusiastic sweetheart, we are looking for active owners who would like to go out with her, who can offer her challenges and adventures but also provide the structure and routine that give her peace. Freya will definitely be an extremely fun, friendly and loyal dog companion for the person who can offer her her well-deserved home!

About Freya

What life with Freya looks like

Freya is a small adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Freya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Freya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Freya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Freya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Freya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Freya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Freya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
