Gandalf

Male · Adult · 6 years

Gandalf - the Giant Our giant Gandalf already came to his foster home in May 2021 and was able to grow up there. The magnificent dog is beautiful, but one should not be deceived by his white polar bear coat. Gandalf is a genuine livestock guardian dog and behaves accordingly to his breed. He shows territorial behavior and takes very good care of the house, property, and his people. Surely no one will enter the property uninvited, and also when people walk by near the property, he barks, which is his task. He does not necessarily enjoy visitors, there are selected ones who can then pet and cuddle him, others have to leave him alone. For this reason, a home would be perfect for Gandalf where there are not so many changing visitors. With children, the large dog is fantastic and gentle. His new home should be rural, such a dog does not belong in the big city. On his foster home, he knows cats, guinea pigs, chickens, and horses. He does absolutely nothing to his "own" animals, he even follows a foreign cat on the property. He lives with other dogs and can eat at the same time with them; this had to be well established by his humans so that he leaves the other bowls in peace. This situation would have to be set up well again in his new home. Speaking of bowls, unfortunately our Gandalf has a food allergy and is currently fed exclusively with food containing rabbit. He tolerates this well. With strange dogs, Gandalf's sympathy decides, other dogs should not be too excited and intrusive, as he does not like that. If there is sympathy, he is very playful, especially playing games, which delights his heart. Several short walks a day are exactly to his liking, rather than few very long walks. While walking, Gandalf loves to sniff around and stroll comfortably. His humans should be physically capable of handling him, as he carries quite some weight on the scale. The big dog definitely does not want to live outside, he needs the family connection and his humans around him. Gandalf has a Leishmania titer, the disease has not broken out yet. We are looking for people with experience who can provide him with clear guidance and still allow him to fulfill his genetic destiny, then he is a real dream guy. Gandalf can be visited at his foster home if interested.

About Gandalf

What life with Gandalf looks like

Gandalf is a extra-large adult dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gandalf, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gandalf?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gandalf on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gandalf if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gandalf already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gandalf isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gandalf and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
