Gero

German Shepherd · Male · 3 years

I am Gero, an experienced dog looking for a home that will work with me. I am not a beginner dog – but I have potential. Unfortunately, I have bitten before, and I also stress out the animal shelter. That’s why I am currently living in another facility that works with me and where I have made some great progress: Peace and plenty of meadow runs make me happy and help me a lot. Chaos and big changes are not for me. I love fetch games, like tasty ball, Kongs, or chew sticks. I am very alert and eager to learn, know the basic commands, and respond well to food motivation. I wear my muzzle reliably. I have regular contact with fellow animals and have learned a wide range of action possibilities and social interaction. While I am not generally compatible with all dogs, I have found some with whom I can act positively, and I am also present on social walks. With my trusted people, everyday handling is possible – but strangers are suspicious to me. I know how to drive a car and handle it well and confidently. Visits to the city park with dog encounters, passersby, cyclists, and even my “enemy image” cars now also go well. I wish for a home with people who have experience with my breed and more challenging dogs. I am not suited for the loud city, so a house with an enclosed garden in a more peaceful area would be perfect. Children should not live in the household. Whether I would be a good second dog to an existing female dog would need to be tested based on mutual affection. Could there also be the right, experienced home for me?

About Gero

What life with Gero looks like

Gero is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: History of biting incident, requires experienced handler, tendency to redirect in conflict situations

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gero, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gero?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gero on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gero if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gero already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gero isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gero and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
