What does FIV+ mean? It’s a feline immunodeficiency virus infection—commonly referred to as “feline AIDS” because it resembles the human version of the disease. Infection usually occurs through direct contact: when the carrier’s saliva comes into contact with another cat’s blood—for example, through deep bite wounds sustained during fights. Cats with FIV can live alongside other FIV-positive cats as well as healthy cats, provided the animals are calm and don’t engage in aggressive fights. Only cats can become infected; neither you nor your dog can catch FIV, nor can you transmit it to your neighbor’s cat.
