Gitana

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 20 years

Gitana shares her story with her companion Triana. The two were abandoned in a dog park and subsequently taken to a municipal animal shelter where the care provided to the dogs was far from adequate. They had to endure those difficult conditions for far too long before someone finally recognized their plight and helped them escape from that place. Since then, Gitana and Triana have been able to experience what a dog's life should be like at the Protectora Villena: with care, security, and people who pay attention to them. Gitana has maintained her wonderful character despite her past. She is an exceptionally friendly, social, and active dog full of life. She loves being around people, enjoys their attention, and shows every day that there is still a lot of life in her. As a Podenca, she naturally brings the typical characteristics of her breed: she is attentive, energetic, and has a strong hunting instinct. Small animals like birds and rabbits particularly interest her. Therefore, Gitana should not live with small animals in her new home and walks should be made safe accordingly. A securely fenced area where she can move freely and expend her energy would be ideal for her. Gitana is not a dog who is content with a quiet life as a retiree - she wants to experience more, be on the move, sniff around, and discover the world with her humans. At the same time, she is a loving and social dog who simply wants to belong. We wish Gitana people who enjoy an active Podenca, understand her hunting instinct, and meet her with loving consistency and security. She has already waited far too long for her life to turn around. Now, her time should finally begin - with people who show her that the coming years will be the best of her life.

DE·Show original

© 2006-2026 by Tierschutzverein Europa e.V. - All rights reserved

About Gitana

What life with Gitana looks like

Gitana is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gitana, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gitana?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gitana on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gitana if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gitana already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gitana isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gitana and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
