Adopt Greta

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Greta is an absolute dream dog. She is obedient, gets along with cats and is very loving to every human, whether big or small. Unfortunately, a blood test revealed Anaplasmosis, so one or two blood tests per year are required to check the values. If these do not change, no treatment is necessary and Greta can expect a normal dog's life. Since Greta has been waiting for a home with us for a long time, she was moved to a foster home. With her cuddly nature and great basic obedience, she has settled in quickly and gets along very well with the other animals. She has developed a wonderful bond with her caregiver and is very attached to her, so we have decided that, due to her sad past, Greta should not be subjected to another owner change. Also, to prevent her health condition from deteriorating again. Therefore, Greta is now in a permanent foster home and people are being sought who would like to take on a sponsorship for her. Update 2011: Unfortunately, based on Greta's X-ray findings, a negative result was found, she has severe HD, she could actually use new hips. Now Greta receives special food from the vet and is accordingly exercised, and we hope that she will continue to run as well as she does now. Update 2013: Due to recurring intolerance to various food and scratching and biting, an allergy test was carried out. So far, she has been able to be adjusted to suitable food, which is also frozen in advance to kill food mites. In addition, and as a precaution, she receives a miticide monthly.

About Greta

What life with Greta looks like

Greta is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Greta, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Greta?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Greta on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Greta if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Greta already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Greta isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Greta and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
