Adopt Hänsel

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 10 years

Hello, I am the white Hänsel and came into the world in December 2016 in the Hunsrücker Schafherde from Schutzengel für Tiere as an actually unforgivable "accident" with my sister Gretel. Why we exist came about like this: Our mother is Mira, and our father, unfortunately already deceased, was Toni. The young ram lambs Ares, Kaami, Balu, and Toni were neutered too late and promptly took advantage of the opportunity to mate with our mother Mira or with Timmi. There are so-called seasonal sheep breeds among us, where the ewes are only fertile when the days are short, that is, from September to January. Estrus is controlled by daylight and triggered by the decreasing daylight. Therefore, the Schutzengel were not so eager to castrate them in the spring. Unfortunately, our mother Mira, like Timmi, is of the Merino breed and belongs to the aseasonal breeds that can be fertile throughout the year. Bad luck… And, it is also good to know: A castrated ram is often still fertile for up to six weeks after castration…. The gestation period in sheep lasts 150 days, that is, five months. The former caretakers Christian and Christine were surprised when between Christmas 2015 and New Year's Day, we four lively lambs were skipping around in the snow in two-day intervals. I look like my father Toni like a brother, a paternity test was therefore unnecessary. Of course, Schutzengel für Tiere were upset about their mistake, because the suffering of the so-called "utilized" sheep is huge, and we four blocked places for the rescue of other sheep threatened with slaughter. However, the whole herd was happy with us and the two mothers. Even old sheep that suffer from arthritis ran more lightly than usual across the meadow. My friends Max 3 and Moritz were of course immediately neutered as soon as they reached the required age of six months. It would not have been good earlier, because castrated rams can easily develop bladder stones. Would you like to be my godmother/godfather? Now fill out the sponsorship form.

About Hänsel

What life with Hänsel looks like

Hänsel is a medium-sized senior mixed breed animal waiting at Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. in Drolshagen.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Hänsel far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hänsel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hänsel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hänsel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hänsel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hänsel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hänsel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hänsel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
