Hazel

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 2 years

The pretty Hazel is a young, athletic female dog with lots of energy, just beginning to explore the world. Although Hazel didn't have a good start in life and has spent half her life in the animal shelter, she initially reacts with some insecurity to the unknown. However, she is very interested in her environment and learns quickly, so she now handles everyday situations well. With strangers, Hazel is initially a bit reserved and doesn't like being pushed by strangers, but who does? Once she realizes that the people aren't going to harm her, she warms up quickly and can't get enough attention and cuddles. In the house, Hazel behaves quite civilized. Due to her young age, she still has a few youthful impulses and sometimes doesn't know what to do with her energy. Walking is Hazel's greatest passion. She already does a great job on the leash and ignores passersby and her fellow animals. She occasionally reacts to movement stimuli like cyclists and loud cars, but this has improved significantly in the short time at her foster home and will certainly be well under control with further training. When it comes to her fellow animals, it depends on their affinities. In her foster home, Hazel has a "best friend" and a female dog with whom she occasionally has conflicts over food or cuddles. A confident single dog that Hazel can look up to would certainly be helpful, but Hazel would also enjoy a life as a single princess. Whether the charming little girl dog also gets along with cats still needs to be tested if there's interest. She seems to know cats and has a healthy respect for them. For Hazel, we wish for a home with active people where she can be both physically and mentally challenged but also get the necessary rest. Due to Hazel's temperament, there should be no children under about 12 years old in her new home. Currently, Hazel lives in 35043 Marburg – Cappel, where she can be visited. Hazel is neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, tested negative for Mediterranean diseases, and has an EU passport.

DE·Show original

About Hazel

What life with Hazel looks like

Hazel is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hundehilfe Portugal in Speyer.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hazel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hazel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundehilfe Portugal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hazel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hazel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundehilfe Portugal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hazel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hazel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundehilfe Portugal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hazel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
