Hera

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Hera arrived at our shelter as a found female dog from Tuczno. Despite numerous advertisements, no one was looking for her, no one recognized her, and to this day we still don’t know what her story was. At first, she seemed calm and friendly. However, over time, her behavior began to change. Hera fiercely guards her resources and, in situations she perceives as threatening, she’s ready to attack. She’s an unpredictable dog, so she requires great caution and a good understanding of canine communication. She has certain individuals whom she trusts and around whom she doesn’t display aggressive behavior. Currently, she’s taken out only onto a securely fenced area, without any direct contact. Hera is a Central Asian Shepherd-type dog, and dogs of this type require experienced, consistent caregivers and appropriate living conditions. She’s not a dog for the average family or for a first-time owner. At this moment, we’re primarily looking for a foundation or organization willing to take Hera into their care, conduct further assessments of her behavior, and help find her a suitable, responsible home. We believe that with the right guidance and by experienced handlers, she can finally get the chance she deserves. If you represent a foundation, have experience working with Central Asian Shepherd-type dogs, or feel you can help Hera—please get in touch with us. What’s most important for her is finding a place where safety and responsibility always come first.

Początkowo sprawiała wrażenie spokojnej i przyjaznej. Z czasem jednak jej zachowanie uległo zmianie.

About Hera

What life with Hera looks like

Hera is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Skałowo in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hera, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hera?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Skałowo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hera on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hera if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Skałowo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hera already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hera isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Skałowo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hera and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
