Adopt Hermine

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 8 years

In the summer of 2015, the wild boar Hermine, living on a Dortmund bio-farm as a Mastschwein, was rescued just before being slaughtered along with her friend Pippilotta. Originally, Nadja, who had fallen in love with Pippilotta, had only started a donation campaign for her. But because Hermine and Pippilotta had been separated for pickup, the animal rescuer could not bring herself to leave Hermine to her fate, and fortunately, the money for her release came together. So, in July 2015, the two friends moved into the foster home Schwefe in Soest and enjoyed two and a half years of carefree life in open-stall farming. Then, unfortunately, we were forced to give up the foster home Schwefe. In April 2018, our pigs moved to the Hochsauerlandkreis, to Erflinghausen near Meschede. The veterinary office in Soest had required a second electrified fence because of the threat of African swine fever, to ensure no contact with wild boars. But the fence would not have saved us from a possible stall requirement if African swine fever reached Germany. And in Schwefe, there were only small wooden open-stall pens, in which the pigs could not be housed according to their species-appropriate needs if free-range farming were banned. Therefore, we reluctantly decided to find a new, secure place for our pigs, which we found in Erflinghausen near Meschede. You can find a description of the foster home Meschede under this link. The place has the great advantage that within a three-kilometer radius, there are no pig farms. If swine fever breaks out in a farm, all pigs within a kilometer are often slaughtered out of precaution. A terrifying thought. The pigs are housed with the same companions in the stall as on the pasture in Schwefe. Hermine and Pippilotta are lucky to be able to live in an entire stall compartment alone.

About Hermine

What life with Hermine looks like

Hermine is a medium-sized adult mixed breed animal waiting at Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. in Drolshagen.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Hermine far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hermine, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hermine?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hermine on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hermine if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hermine already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hermine isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hermine and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
