Adopt Hershey

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Hershey and Harley, two extraordinarily handsome and large/ extra-large dogs, are desperately seeking a loving home to call their own. These sweet boys are filled with an overwhelming desire for affection, and their soft, soulful eyes will touch your heart. Though they may be a bit nervous until they get to know you, their gentle nature shines through, and they would happily sit for hours, basking in your love. Hershey and Harley always take treats from your hand with the utmost gentleness. Brave Harley leads the way with quiet confidence, while his more timid brother, Hershey, finds comfort in Harley’s bravery. Their bond is heartwarming, and they dream of a rural or semi-rural home with direct access to a large, secure garden to explore, along with possibly another friendly dog for companionship. These incredible boys need a very special family, one that is willing to invest the time, patience, and kindness needed to help them adjust to life outside the kennel. In return, they will offer boundless love and loyalty. Hershey and Harley’s hearts are overflowing with affection, and they are ready to share it with the right family who will cherish them forever. What they need is an understanding family, a soft voice, a kind gentle hand. They will need a quiet, experienced, calm, rural home environment, preferably adult only, with someone who understands that they will have to earn their trust before their true personalities start to show. They are both so eager to belong but not sure how to, so we are looking for a home with an out house or conservatory to give them the time they need to slowly learn how to integrate in their own time. Will you be the one to open your heart and home to these gentle boys? Your love could be the miracle they’ve been waiting for. This is the story of Hershey and Harley. They, along with their seven siblings, were discovered abandoned, hungry, and alone at a chicken abattoir. They were initially fostered in a friend’s yard, where a spacious kennel run was built to accommodate them until space became available at Happy’s, our shelter. Now that they have moved to Happy’s, Hershey and Harley have become firm favourites with everyone who meets them. As you can imagine, each one of our dogs is very precious to us. They haven’t had the best start in life, and therefore, it is absolutely crucial we find the right homes for them. When you complete a registration form, please tell us as much as you can about why you are looking to adopt a dog and how you think you can meet their needs. Every dog is an individual, and our amazing rehoming team will know exactly what type of home each dog needs to thrive. For example, will the dog cope with a small garden or is it the type of dog who needs to live in a rural environment? Will the dog enjoy being around children, or is it best suited to an adult only home? Will it cope sharing a home with other pets, or is it best as an only dog? Are you outdoorsy types who like to go hiking, or would you prefer a dog who is happy to snuggle up on the sofa with you? Our rehoming team will be very familiar with the needs of each of our dogs and the information you provide on your application form will help them to match you with the right dog. About Hershey

What life with Hershey looks like

Hershey is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hershey, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hershey?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hershey on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hershey if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hershey already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hershey isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hershey and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
