Hugo

Podenco · Male · Puppy · 3 months

Hugo arrived with one of our wonderful Spanish foster homes when he was just 3 months old after being handed over by an elderly hunter who no longer wanted puppies. Despite such an uncertain start in life, Hugo has grown into a wonderfully happy, affectionate young Podenco with a lovely nature. Still only a year old, Hugo has all the fun and enthusiasm you’d expect from a youngster, balanced with a gentle, easy-going temperament. He’s incredibly sociable with other dogs and absolutely loves to play. One of his sweetest traits is how submissive he is during play. No matter the size of the dog he’s with, Hugo will happily roll onto his back and let his friends ‘win’ making him a firm favourite with dogs of all ages and sizes. Hugo walks beautifully on the lead and enjoys getting out and exploring. His hunting instinct appears to be relatively low for a Podenco, showing little interest in rabbits although mice and geckos are still a bit too exciting to ignore. At home Hugo is a typical young dog who enjoys life’s simple pleasures. He loves curling up on the sofa after a day of adventures, playing with toys and is always enthusiastic when mealtimes come around. Whilst Hugo would happily live with other playful dogs, we also think he has the confidence and temperament to thrive as an only dog, provided his family can offer him an active lifestyle and plenty of companionship. He could live with children. Hugo is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. He is passported and available for adoption now. About Hugo

What life with Hugo looks like

Hugo is a puppy/kitten podenco dog waiting at Hope for Podencos in Albacete.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hugo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hugo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hope for Podencos handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hugo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hugo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hope for Podencos will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hugo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hugo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hope for Podencos early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hugo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
