Ivana

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 7 years

Ivana was born around 03/2019, stands 50 cm tall and weighs about 18 kg. Ivana spent her entire life in Bulgaria on a balcony. Her range of movement was limited to that balcony. All she had was a view into the distance, of meadows and fields and of freedom. Her owners fed Ivana only with leftover scraps and otherwise did not care for her at all. Caring animal lovers repeatedly saw the lonely, poor female dog, summoned their courage and asked the owners whether they could take Ivana with them. Thank God the people agreed, and so a new life could begin for Ivana with the animal protectors. Since Ivana knew nothing, had never felt grass under her paws and was unfamiliar with any other environmental stimuli, the animal protectors needed a great deal of time and patience to work on her insecurity. Today she is a sweet, cheerful and playful female dog who gets along very well with her fellow dogs and also with the cats living at the foster home. In the meantime she also enjoys contact with people and soaks up every loving attention and petting session. She still shows great insecurity with loud noises, and it is clear that she has not yet fully forgotten her past. When she is stressed, she begins to howl loudly. For Ivana we are looking for a quiet home with patient people who let her arrive at her own pace, keep working on her fears and show her how beautiful life can be. She will repay them with much gratitude and warmth of heart. Who will give their heart to the wonderful Ivana, who has already suffered so much, and make her journey to happiness possible? We look forward to your inquiries! She has been examined by a veterinarian, dewormed, deflead, microchipped, vaccinated, neutered and tested for Mediterranean diseases including leishmaniasis, and comes with an EU pet passport and TRACES. The protection fee is 595€.

About Ivana

What life with Ivana looks like

Ivana is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierrettung International e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ivana, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ivana?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierrettung International e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ivana on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ivana if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierrettung International e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Ivana already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ivana isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierrettung International e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ivana and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
