João

Mixed Breed · Male

We urgently need adoption for João. For a long time, João lived on the streets, and that life is never easy. However, he managed to maintain trust in humans; whenever he saw people, he would run towards them with his tail up, greeting us happily. He preferred attention and affection over food, unless it was wet food, which he couldn't resist. As years passed, João grew old and began to show difficulties eating, becoming thinner. Incredibly, we discovered that he only had damaged teeth, which were resolved with a dental extraction. During this veterinary check-up, we took advantage of the opportunity to do a full check-up and found out that João is FIV/FeLV negative, incredible for someone who lived on the streets for years. Currently, João is in temporary foster care gaining strength and being well fed, but when that time ends, we don't have anywhere to place him, and it's costing us a lot to return him to his colony because he still lives like that. João is sweet, tolerates other cats well, and even dogs if they are calm. He is an older cat who just needs love and a cozy spot with sun to enjoy his last years of life. Special people are needed to accept special cats; they are rare but exist.

About João

What life with João looks like

João is a adult mixed breed cat waiting at Causas de Caudas in Portugal.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting João, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about João?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Causas de Caudas handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw João on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt João if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Causas de Caudas will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is João already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if João isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Causas de Caudas early rather than rehoming privately; they know João and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
