Adopt Joker

Mixed Breed · Unknown · 1 year

Joker is a malinois mixed breed puppy, more of a teen. He is completely different in character compared to his siblings. While the others played all day, made noise and misbehaved, Joker preferred to stay aside and lay in the corner. His mother was on a leash, and the puppies often went out to the street, where they probably had experiences that left them with more serious fears than in Joker. Because of this, he is much more shy than an average puppy. He gets extremely panicked when cornered, and in his fear, he may bite. He sometimes reacts harshly to other dogs, but an experienced owner can handle this properly. However, he is very attached to the caretakers, likes to snuggle up to them, and obviously needs their protection against the scary outside world. During walks, he often lies down, so it's still necessary to practice walking on a leash with him. Not recommended for young families or first-time owners. Dog daycare and dog training are especially recommended for him, so he can gradually become more confident.

About Joker

What life with Joker looks like

Joker is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Rex Kutyaotthon in Budapest.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Fear-based behavioral issues requiring experienced handler and gradual socialization

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joker, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joker?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rex Kutyaotthon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joker on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joker if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rex Kutyaotthon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joker already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joker isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rex Kutyaotthon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joker and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
