Old German Shepherd PupBorn: 01.01.2019Strangers: friendlyChildren: should be a bit olderRuffians: after sympathyBitches: okayJosef is an Old German Shepherd, who came into the animal shelter through the veterinary office. He was born in early 2019 and is a real dynamic young pup. Originally, he lived with his parents Bolt and Bella on a small farm and had the task of guarding livestock. When there were no more livestock to guard in their former home, the working spirit of the dogs became independent. The three regularly went out and there were biting incidents in the neighborhood. The three dogs were confiscated by the authorities and classified as dangerous. Therefore, in order to give Josef (as well as Bolt and Bella) a home, a handler knowledge examination must be passed at the Ministry. We are happy to support you in any way we can. Additionally, Josef has a leash and muzzle requirement and must be led on these additional safety measures. We will inform you of the exact costs and requirements in a meet-and-greet. Josef is an active, eager-to-learn young pup who learns new things on his walks with his handler and has already made great progress in terms of training. He is athletic and not suitable for couch potatoes, as he wants to experience things. He gets along well with Bolt and Bella and shows excellent social behavior! He plays and roughhouses very much with the two. However, he barks loudly at unfamiliar dogs. Whether a confident second dog can work out in the new home depends on their sympathy. The dogs should be gradually accustomed to each other on joint walks. Josef already knows several commands and follows them word-for-word in calm situations. When stressed or distracted by other dogs, he tends to turn up the volume, typical of a working dog. However, his handler reports that with much calmness and through physical contact, he can be led through stressful situations and it makes it easier for him to deal with stress. Through calm, confident, and especially consistent handling, he can be trained to handle difficult situations. Josef should be placed in a home without cats or other small animals. He is familiar with living with children from his previous home, but they should be older and understand when a dog needs a break. Those interested in Josef should be aware that they will have a working dog and that it is not enough to take a walk around the block three times a day. While guarding sheep or goats is not required here, for example, attending a dog training class with an appropriate sport or working program for herding dogs would be a step in the right direction.

About Josef

What life with Josef looks like

Josef is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hedwig-Trampert-Tierheim Dillingen in Dillingen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Josef, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Josef?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hedwig-Trampert-Tierheim Dillingen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Josef on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Josef if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hedwig-Trampert-Tierheim Dillingen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Josef already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Josef isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hedwig-Trampert-Tierheim Dillingen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Josef and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
