Kalash

Male · Adult · 5 years

My name is Kalash, a tough male dog, 5 years old. I came to DOA as a stray dog. Unfortunately, my previous owners did not pick me up anymore and that's why I'm looking for a new home. My caregivers love me very much, I like to snuggle close to them. I enjoy playing on the field and sniffing around. I have successfully completed my participation in Dutch Celldogs. This is a training program where I went to the prison with other shelter dogs to train with the inmates. During the first two lessons I was still focused on my surroundings and the other dogs but after that I only had eyes for my trainer. I really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun during the training! Training is something my new owners will have to do with me. Right now, it's not really relaxing to walk me outside. I pull strongly on the leash, pay little attention to the person walking with me and if I see other dogs I can't control my excitement. Then I pull very hard on the leash and try everything to get to that dog. At DOA we have started working on this. Together with the trainer we will find out how to best reach me and learn to walk politely on the leash and ignore other dogs. My caregivers also noticed that I can be very alert in my kennel. When people I don't know walk by, I bark a lot to scare them away. Since there is no information from my previous owners, my caregivers don't know if I am also alert at home. But it is good to take this into account. I hope to find a home with people who have a lot of time and attention for me. People who are willing to work with me. Train with me, walk with me, play with me and cuddle with me. Are you up for a challenge and would you like to meet me? Then fill in the adoption form quickly and who knows, see you soon!

About Kalash

What life with Kalash looks like

Kalash is a adult dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kalash, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kalash?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kalash on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kalash if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kalash already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kalash isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kalash and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
