Hera

Female · Puppy · 7 months

Hello, I am Hera and I am happy to introduce myself to you. Since recently, I have been at the DOA animal shelter because my previous owner could no longer take care of me. The first few days at the DOA were very exciting for me. I did not understand where I suddenly was. Luckily, there were kind people with patience who gave me the time and love to adapt. After a few days, I cautiously climbed onto their lap and began to thaw out. I enjoyed the hugs and started playing more and more. When I mustered the courage to go out into the field, I found it super fun and ran around joyfully. As you can read, I had to adapt to the new situation, which is something my caretakers see more of. At a new place, I tend to close up a bit and need some time to adapt. Once I am accustomed, you would hardly recognize me. I play, run, and fly around. I am still young and have a lot to learn. Therefore, I am looking for an owner who can guide me well. I need a lot of training, especially for outdoor walks. I have taught myself to chase after cyclists and motorbikers. This is not only unwanted behavior but can also be very dangerous if I collide with the vehicle. The DOA has already started training and practicing this with me, but it takes time to fully get rid of it. I am therefore not suitable for everyone and every living environment. I need an owner who has experience with dogs and who is willing to work with me. Someone who gives me confidence in new situations, who guides me through puberty, who works with me during walks. Someone who goes forward with me to help me grow and bloom into a loving, social, and self-assured dog.

About Hera

What life with Hera looks like

Hera is a puppy/kitten dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hera, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hera?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hera on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hera if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hera already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hera isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hera and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
