Kessu

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Fast-paced Kessu is looking for a new home. At this time, we are accepting inquiries about Kessu ONLY via email—unlike our usual procedure. Please tell us about your dog-handling experience and what kind of home you could offer Kessu. Please note that we may receive a large number of inquiries, and we won't be able to respond to all of them. We will be in touch with the selected home candidates. Little toy breed dog Kessu is searching for a new home. Kessu is a very friendly, energetic boy who quickly bonds with his human companion. He’s always around whenever something’s happening or when he’s causing a bit of excitement himself. A charming fellow who also has determination—when necessary, he’ll step up as a “market policeman,” even when it’s not really needed. He gets along well with other dogs; previously, he lived in a larger pack, so it would be ideal if his future home had a social female dog of similar size as a companion. To avoid potential problems, we won’t place him with another male dog. Kessu is really playful and loves his stuffed animal, which he always carries to bed in the evening and rests his head on top of it. At first, he’s a bit shy around small children, but once he gets to know them, he’ll happily climb into their laps and shower them with kisses. We won’t place Kessu in a family with very young children, as he might start barking at sudden movements and easily get overexcited. Living with older children who are already school-aged and accustomed to dogs is easier. He travels in the car perfectly well in his own lightweight crate—he doesn’t get carsick or make much noise. Sometimes he even forgets there’s a dog in the car, as Kessu stays completely quiet throughout the journey and eagerly jumps into the car. On leash walks, he strides along energetically and always sets the pace as the group leader. He might bark at another dog’s barking or bark at another dog, but he’ll stop and calm down when reminded. He thoroughly and enthusiastically investigates scents; thanks to his small size, he’s very easy to manage. Kessu has been neutered and received dental care at the vet. His teeth were in such poor condition that all of them had to be removed. For the rest of his life, Kessu will eat only soft food—wet food—and now, in his foster home, he’s eating soaked dry kibble with a good appetite. Kessu has never been left completely alone; in his foster home in Pukkila, there are other dogs to keep him company when people aren’t around. Being alone can pose challenges, at least initially, and he might bark after his owner leaves—but you should start practicing being alone right away once he arrives at his new home. We’re looking for a home for Kessu either in a row house or a single-family home, and the future owner must commit to providing proper care and training for the dog and giving him enough time to adjust to his new home. Kessu is house-trained, and in his foster home in Pukkila, you can arrange a visit to meet him. Please note that the dog’s behavior may change once he moves to his new home.

About Kessu

What life with Kessu looks like

Kessu is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Rekku Rescue ry in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Frequently asked

Adopting Kessu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kessu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rekku Rescue ry handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kessu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kessu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rekku Rescue ry will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kessu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kessu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rekku Rescue ry early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kessu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
