Laila

Podenco · Female · Senior · 9 years

Animal shelter Tenerife Update January 8, 2026: Laila is doing very well at her foster address. She is staying in an apartment but regularly goes to the off-leash field. She likes it although she also enjoys being scratched and petted and therefore does not always have time to explore the field. Three new photos and a new video have been added. Input August 19, 2025: Laila is our longest "long stay" dog. Not really a title you want to win unfortunately... But it means that our girl has now been waiting for her own home the longest! And that is quite understandable because when she came to us more than four years ago she was definitely not ready for her own home. She wasn't even ready for the outside world... Laila came from Gran Canaria, another island. She was taken away by the police from a hunter who had as many as 90 podencos in the most terrible conditions. Her scars and also her backpack show how hard her past was. Of course, this treasure had to come from very far! Everything was new, everything was exciting, everything was scary. This senior is now a completely different lady than the one we saw coming in more than four years ago. Eventually, she happily and proudly joined our daily walks and greeted us enthusiastically and wagging her tail at the gate every morning. In these years, she has always been easy to integrate into groups. This is always a difficult task in the animal shelter but with Laila it was very easy because she understands dog language very well and has a stable character. She does not let herself be walked over and tries to take control of the situation a bit when there is tension in the group. Always predictable and fair, this provided stability in her group. Visitors were cautiously but also already enthusiastically welcomed and once outside she walked politely and joyfully with everyone, known or not. Some may have noticed. This is spoken in past tense! That is because Laila has been in the shelter for a few months now. She is now completely used to the home situation, enjoys daily walks and can't believe her eyes at all these luxuries she had never seen before: a soft bed to sleep in! An own person who lovingly fills her own food bowl every day, a routine that gives her security... What a life! She enjoys it and is clearly grateful. Also, the other dogs and cats in the house she finds nice to have around. You won't easily get her upset and you hardly notice she's in the house but outside you can clearly see her enjoying, sniffing, discovering...what a pleasure to see her bloom, a little more every day. Laila has come from very far but certainly has a lot more to learn. Therefore, we are also looking for someone with experience but especially with the understanding and patience to guide Laila into real dog life with much love. Someone who may be loyal to her for the rest of her beautiful life. Laila does not immediately stand out as a podenco that jumps out among the rest but her story and enthusiasm for life are undoubtedly admirable. We wish her that "happy ending", her own mat, her new beginning, her end of a bad story...into a nice dog life. No more stops: hunters, animal shelter, shelter...Now the golden final mat is finally due, she is completely ready for it and deserves it so much! We hope her last years will be the best of her life and that they will be with a human she can call her own, on whom she can rely and with whom she can grow and share her quirks and passion for life. Who, who can offer her that well-deserved chance?

Input 19 augustus 2025: Laila is onze langste "langzitter". Alles was nieuw, alles was spannend, alles was eng.

About Laila

What life with Laila looks like

Laila is a medium-sized senior podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Laila, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Laila?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Laila on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Laila if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Laila already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Laila isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Laila and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
