Lara

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 11 years

Lara, a female dog, has been at the shelter since March 2026. She is estimated to be born around January 2015 and is approximately 50-55 cm tall and weighs 25-29 kg. She has a disability and is a Gnadenplatz dog. You can watch a video about Lara here. Lara is a shy dog who was rescued from the streets of Romania and taken to the shelter. She has lived peacefully in a residential area for several years, but residents complained. You can find more information about how dogs come to the shelter and answers to general questions in our animal welfare FAQ. Lara is unsure and shy in the Romanian shelter. She prefers to retreat to her doghouse and observe from there. She has already been allowed to take a trip to the dog playground, where she was also unsure, but also explored the surroundings curiously. Our volunteers took the opportunity to free her from her long, matted fur, which had never been groomed before. Lara suffers from bilateral hip arthrosis. For this reason, a home without many stairs is sought to spare the dog pain. Our placement team knows the exact health status best. If you have any questions, please send us a message. We are looking for a rural home for Lara with dog-experienced people who can show her the patience she needs to gain confidence and warm up in peace. There should be no children in the home. We want people who are aware that animal shelter dogs bring a certain history with them. We can never predict how a dog will react to life in Germany at the shelter. That's why we're looking for people who bring patience, perseverance, and goodwill. But one thing is certain: whoever adopts instead of buys not only gives a second chance to an animal, but also actively decides against animal suffering - and for a life with a very special companion by their side. Already in love? Send us a self-disclosure! Adoption If you are thinking of adopting, first read through the placement process. All dogs are vaccinated, chipped, dewormed, flea-free, and neutered before departure (except for puppies up to 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs older than 1 year are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have any questions, please send a message to our placement team.

About Lara

What life with Lara looks like

Lara is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
