Adopt Leo

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

For an explanation, please read Why we are cautious about placing foreign dogs with families with small children. Information: In May 2026, we visited Elisa's animal shelter in Romania again, with which we work closely. We met many pups and some adult dogs by sitting in the kennel with them, playing, cuddling, and walking with them. Only the dogs we expect to be happy in the Netherlands - and their adopters with the dog - are mediated by us. Leo definitely belongs to that group! Leo was found in the field by one of the nuns from the nearby monasteries. He was taken to Elisa's animal shelter and thus gets a chance for a new start. We expect Leo to grow into a medium-sized dog. He was found without parent dogs, so which breeds are represented in his (previous) parents is unknown. Therefore, the adult size remains an estimate. Leo is ready to travel and can join the next transport. He has a valid rabies vaccination and naturally also his chip, other vaccinations, and his passport are in order. When a suitable adopter or foster family appears for him, our foundation arranges the transport with professional pet transport. Our puppies are brought one by one to the address of their shelter or permanent home. We hope that we can quickly book a one-way trip to the Netherlands for this cheerful young dog! In Romania itself, dogs in the animal shelter have no chance, even the young ones... Adopter or foster family profile: For Leo we are looking for a home with people who have sufficient experience and insight, a not too busy household, and a quiet living environment, enough time, and a well-fenced garden.

About Leo

What life with Leo looks like

Leo is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Straydogs Rescue Nederland in RC Nieuwe Pekela.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Straydogs Rescue Nederland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Straydogs Rescue Nederland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Leo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Straydogs Rescue Nederland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
